About
The Desire of Ages — the text this whole project was built on

The Desire of Ages (1898) is Ellen G. White's work on the life of Christ — the third volume of her Conflict of the Ages series. This site lets you search its complete, verbatim 1898 text — 87 chapters, 13,799 timed passages — and read along with the public-domain LibriVox recording (Donald Hines), each printed line highlighting as it is spoken. The words shown are always the book's own, sliced from the source text; nothing is paraphrased or invented.

Why this book is here

This is the seed of the whole word-explorer project. The read-along and alignment engine behind the sibling study sites — Keith Moore / Word Supply and Les Feldick — was first built, tuned, and proven on The Desire of Ages: its printed text paired with a public-domain spoken reading. Giving the book its own home, searchable, is a way of returning the favour to the work that made everything else possible.

Credits & sources, with gratitude

The 1898 text is in the public domain. This edition's etext was prepared and made freely available by the Ellen G. White Estate (Trustees of Ellen G. White Publications, Silver Spring, Maryland), and obtained from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (ccel.org).

The spoken reading used to build and measure the alignment engine is the public-domain volunteer audiobook of The Desire of Ages from LibriVox, released into the public domain. With thanks to Ellen Gould White (1827–1915) and to everyone who made these works freely available.
